SEC signs landmark First Peoples partnership agreement
27 October 2026
SEC has signed a historic agreement with the Wurundjeri Woi-wurrung Aboriginal Cultural Heritage Corporation to support First Peoples in sharing in the benefits of Victoria’s renewable energy transformation.
On 16 October 2026, Wurundjeri Elders, community members and staff gathered with SEC on Wurundjeri Biik (Country) for a signing ceremony.
The parties signed formal partnership and benefit-sharing agreements between the Wurundjeri Corporation and SEC, entitled ‘Biik-bulak Wurrung-nganjin’. In Woi-wurrung language, this means ‘Country flows, we walk together’.
The agreements establish a commitment to delivering benefits for Wurundjeri people, under which Wurundjeri Corporation will share in the benefits of the Melbourne Renewable Energy Hub, a large-scale battery co-owned by SEC. This is an important example of the broader renewable energy industry forging long-term partnerships with First Peoples and community-led organisations.
These agreements were co-designed by Wurundjeri Corporation and SEC through a collaborative process that respected cultural protocols and governance principles.
“Today marks a significant milestone in our relationship with SEC and our commitment to share benefits from renewable energy developments with Traditional Owners and Country, for now and future generations,” said Mark Harper, CEO of Wurundjeri Corporation.
SEC CEO, Chris Miller said: “We are delighted to sign this Partnership Statement with the Wurundjeri Corporation as it forms a practical example of how we work to embed Traditional Owner knowledge in our decisions to strengthen First Peoples' rights.”.
