Melbourne Renewable Energy Hub
SEC has partnered with Equis Australia to deliver the Melbourne Renewable Energy Hub (the Hub) at Plumpton, in Melbourne’s west.
Now operational, the Hub provides 600 megawatts of capacity and 1.6 gigawatt hours of storage – enough capacity to power 200,000 homes during the evening peak period.
The Hub’s 444 battery units soak up excess power generated from wind and solar. They charge when renewable energy is most abundant and discharge when supplies tighten, putting downward pressure on power prices.
Its powerful battery units will strengthen the electricity network as ageing coal-fired power stations retire and unlock capacity for more renewable energy.
Delivered on time and on budget, the Hub has provided significant economic benefits. This includes creating work and training opportunities for more than 1,200 people, including over 70 apprentices, cadets and trainees.
The project prioritised local businesses, with more than a dozen Melbourne-based companies providing services and supplies such as electrical works, civil construction, traffic management, landscaping and construction materials.
SEC and Equis are supporting a Community Benefit Fund (fund) worth $2.5 million in total, or $100,000 a year for the operational life of the project (25 years).
