Going electric at home: Do you need to upgrade your switchboard, meter or electricity supply?

If you think you need to overhaul your home's electrical infrastructure before you can go electric, you’re likely in for a pleasant surprise.

Many homes can accommodate new electric appliances with relatively small changes, such as adding a new circuit, reconfiguring a meter or using smarter energy management.

Four things to know about your home’s electricity setup
When you’re considering a new electric appliance, there are four parts of your home’s electrical setup that may come into play:

- your electricity meter
- your phase supply
- your mains connection.
Together, they determine how electricity gets into your home and how it's distributed.
Your switchboard – you might only need a new circuit
Your switchboard distributes electricity through your home and protects individual circuits.
In many cases, when you add a new electric product or appliance, you may just need extra circuits for appliances like:
- heat pump hot water systems
- induction cooktop
- reverse-cycle heating and cooling
- solar and battery systems
- EV chargers.
If there's enough space in your existing board, your electrician may only need to add circuits. Older switchboards and homes with increasing electricity demand could need a switchboard upgrade.
Your electricity meter – may only need reconfiguring
Your meter records how much electricity your household uses – and, if you have solar, how much energy you export to the grid.
Your meter could need to be reconfigured or replaced when:
- you’re installing a solar and battery system
- you’re moving to a specialised EV electricity plan
- you have an aging or faulty meter.
In many cases, this change is just a reconfiguration, not a replacement.
Single-phase and three-phase power – most won’t need to upgrade
Most Victorian homes run on single-phase power, which is suitable for many everyday appliances and electric home upgrades.
Three-phase power is generally used in homes with higher electricity needs, like those with:
- multiple, large heating and cooling systems
- workshop equipment
- more than one EV charger
- EVs that are capable of faster charging speeds.
Importantly, most households don’t need to shift to three-phase power when adding new electric products like EV chargers, induction appliances or reverse-cycle heating and cooling systems.

Your mains connection determines how much electricity your home can draw from the grid.
Even older homes with lower-capacity connections may avoid a mains upgrade through careful appliance selection, smart energy management and load-control technology.
