SEC helps businesses unlock value with virtual power plant

SEC is helping businesses play an active role in the energy system.

One way we’re doing this is by establishing a virtual power plant.
A virtual power plant connects distributed energy assets – such as the solar and batteries used by businesses – into a single, intelligent network. These assets can then work together to respond to the needs of the business, as well as the electricity grid, in real time.
“Almost any energy asset with flexibility can create value through SEC’s virtual power plant,” Rebecca Tilbrook, Energy Solutions Leader said.
“That includes batteries and rooftop solar, as well as back-up generators, industrial equipment, cold storage and refrigeration, heating, ventilation and air-conditioning systems, pumps, fans and aerators, and even electric vehicles and charging equipment.”
By joining SEC’s virtual power plant, businesses can make better use of existing assets and flexible energy loads, while helping improve the reliability and resilience of Victoria’s electricity system.

The virtual power plant can help businesses get more value from their energy assets by optimising when they use, store and export energy, while rewarding them for supporting the grid during periods of high demand.
Businesses can earn bill credits and payments for making their flexible energy assets available, with participation managed in a way that minimises disruption to their operations.
