This interactive workshop, linked to the Victorian curriculum 2.0, introduces students to the jobs required for the renewable energy transition and how their individual skills and interests can lead them to an exciting career.

The workshop can be delivered as an incursion at your school or at the SEC Morwell hub.

Workshop scenario

Victoria’s energy transition will create thousands of jobs – from electrical engineering to community engagement. In this interactive workshop students explore the exciting career opportunities in the renewable energy industry. Students will identify their skills and interests and discover how they align with a job in renewable energy.

Workshop format

The workshop is delivered as an incursion at your school and can be scheduled to fit your timetabling needs. The workshop is also delivered at the SEC Morwell hub.

We have two options:

  • 90 minutes with Essential Strengths activity (wind turbine challenge)
  • 60 minutes without Essential Strengths activity

Introduction

  • Workshop overview and the role of SEC in the energy transition.
  • Introduce students to the renewable industry and future workforce requirements.

Discuss the energy transition

  • Introduce the role and types of renewable energy supporting the energy transition and meeting our emission targets.
  • Discuss the types and number of jobs required for the transition, and ask students to identify jobs they are interested in.

Discuss the energy transition and the  workforce required

  • Introduce the role and types of renewable energy supporting the energy transition and meeting Victoria’s emission targets.
  • Discuss the types and number of jobs required for the transition and ask students to consider jobs they are interested in.
  • Discuss Essential Strengths required in the workforce.

Activity

  • Working in small groups, students will complete hands-on activities and small group discussions to identify their skills and interests.
  • Students develop an individual profile of themselves, identify a career category and discover how this can be used to inform career choices.
  • Based on these outcomes, students will see which renewable energy jobs they are aligned with.

Reflection

  • Students to reflect on their outcomes and identify areas of research.

Wrap-up

  • Discuss what students learnt and answer questions regarding the energy transition.

Options for extension activities

  • Essential Strengths activity: Students work in teams to build a wind turbine out of cardboard.  Time after the challenge to discuss how Essential Strengths were used by the team.

Frequently asked questions

How much does this incursion cost?

All workshops are free of charge.

How many students can attend this workshop?

Workshops can be delivered to two classes at a time and multiple workshops can be scheduled throughout the day.  If you would like the workshop to be delivered to a whole year level, workshops can be delivered over multiple days.

What level of supervision is required?

The workshops are delivered by experienced educators. The school is responsible for the duty of care and behaviour management of the students and the teacher must stay in the classroom for the duration of the session.
Please discuss appropriate behaviour with your students to ensure that everyone can enjoy their experience.

Which class should we hold the workshop in?

The workshop is best suited to a science or technology class.

What type of classroom and equipment is required?

Students will be working in groups, so tables set up for group work is preferable. Tables are not essential, and students can work in small groups on the floor and in break-out spaces.

AV equipment for a presentation is required, all other materials are provided.

Does SEC comply with Victoria’s Child Safe Standards?

SEC is committed to the safety and wellbeing of all children and young people. All staff have been trained in appropriate ways to work with children and all have a valid Working With Children Check.
