Firefighting water tanks set to be installed at SEC Delburn Wind Farm

16 February 2026

Preliminary works are underway at the SEC Delburn Wind Farm to prepare the site for construction to begin next month.  The works include the installation of five 130,000 litre firefighting water tanks as part of the project’s extensive fire mitigation measures.

Pine trees will be harvested to enable installation of the construction compound and concrete water tanks, with the preliminary works beginning Monday, 16 February at the corner of Smiths Rd and Strzelecki Highway Delburn.

The works will take place over several weeks, with minimal traffic disruptions due to all site access via existing roads and tracks.

SEC Delburn Wind Farm is Victoria’s first publicly owned, utility-scale wind generation project, located near the Latrobe Valley. Once operational in 2028, the project will deliver up to 205 megawatts of renewable electricity – enough to power more than 130,000 homes.

A stringent fire risk management approach is in place to ensure the wind farm will not increase fire risk in the area, with the water tanks just one of many fire mitigation measures. Other measures include built in fire detection and suppression systems in each of the 33 wind turbines and fire camera monitoring to provide swift fire location detection.

The preliminary works come as SEC encourages community members and Gippsland-based businesses to attend information sessions next month to learn more about the project.

SEC Executive General Manager, Assets Lane Crockett said people will be able to learn about job and contractor opportunities and the project’s construction.

“This project brings significant local benefits, including more than 300 local jobs during construction and more than $22 million in neighbour and community benefit sharing programs.

“During March we will be out in Gippsland talking to the community about the many work and supplier opportunities that the project will offer. I encourage people interested to come along, meet the team and find out how they can be part of this important project.”

The sessions are taking place from Monday 2 March across the region.
