The Australian Government’s Cheaper Home Batteries Program helps households and small businesses reduce the upfront cost of installing a solar battery (including modular solar batteries, also called stackable batteries).

Discount amount

Eligible Australian households, small businesses and community groups can receive a discount of around 30% off the purchase prices of an eligible battery system.

The discount:

is available for batteries connected to new or existing solar PV systems, and is based on the size (usable capacity) of the battery
is available on the purchase price of an eligible battery system that meets required safety and performance standards
is applied automatically through the Smallscale Renewable Energy Scheme (most often the installer applies for the discount on your behalf, but you can also do it yourself)
is based on the year your battery is installed (the discount will reduce annually until 2030 in line with reducing battery prices).

Eligibility criteria

For buyers

You may be eligible if:

you’re an Australian household or small business
you buy a new, eligible solar battery system (see below)

You can be eligible whether or not you already have solar panels.
You can add the battery to an existing solar system.

For batteries

Eligible solar batteries systems:

have a capacity of between 5 kWh and 100 kWh
must be on the Clean Energy Council (CEC) approved battery list
must be installed by an accredited Solar Accreditation Australia installer (or supervised, on site by an accredited installer)
must meet Australian safety and performance requirements.
