About battery discounts
The Australian Government’s Cheaper Home Batteries Program helps households and small businesses reduce the upfront cost of installing a solar battery (including modular solar batteries, also called stackable batteries).
Discount amount
Eligible Australian households, small businesses and community groups can receive a discount of around 30% off the purchase prices of an eligible battery system.
The discount:
- is available for batteries connected to new or existing solar PV systems, and is based on the size (usable capacity) of the battery
- is available on the purchase price of an eligible battery system that meets required safety and performance standards
- is applied automatically through the Smallscale Renewable Energy Scheme (most often the installer applies for the discount on your behalf, but you can also do it yourself)
- is based on the year your battery is installed (the discount will reduce annually until 2030 in line with reducing battery prices).
Government discounts can change. Visit Cheaper Home Batteries Program for the latest information.

Battery system FAQs
The Small‑scale Renewable Energy Scheme is an Australian Government program that lowers the upfront cost of renewable energy systems (like solar panels and batteries).
When you buy an eligible battery system, because it’s a renewable energy system, this creates certificates called small-scale Technology certificates (STCs).
- These certificates have a financial value.
- Your installer sells the certificates on your behalf.
- The value is taken off the upfront cost of your battery system.
The Clean Energy Regulator runs the program and appoints the accreditation partner.
Only designers and installers accredited by Solar Accreditation Australia are eligible to interact with the Small-scale Renewable Energy Scheme.
An accredited installer is responsible for:
- checking eligibility
- creating and claiming the certificates.
Your installer will offer an upfront reduction on the cost of the battery in your quote, or a rebate after installation.
Your battery installation must be undertaken by (or with supervision on site from) a battery installer accredited by Solar Accreditation Australia.
