Lights, camera, action! SEC powers into retail

The SEC has today begun a new chapter as an electricity retailer, powering approximately five percent of Victoria’s electricity market by retailing 100% renewable electricity to Victorian government operations, including public schools, hospitals and museums, for the first time in 30 years.

From today, 1 July 2025, film and television production at Docklands Studios Melbourne will also be powered by the SEC. A state-owned enterprise, Docklands Studios Melbourne is one of more than 4,000 sites across Victoria now powered by the SEC.

During a visit to the studios, SEC Chief Executive Officer, Chris Miller saw up-close the world-class sound stages powered by the SEC.

“Today is a significant milestone for the SEC as we begin retailing to schools, hospitals, much of Victoria’s train and tram network, sporting facilities, government buildings and more, supporting the government's commitment to using 100% renewable electricity in its operations, facilities, and services by 2025.

“And after visiting the Docklands Studios Melbourne up close, we see first-hand the impact we can have now, and into the future, by facilitating the transition to renewable energy for our customers and helping them reach their carbon reduction goals. We look forward to building collaborative partnerships with these incredible organisations for many years to come,” Mr Miller said.

For Docklands Studios Melbourne, the partnership with the SEC provides both commercial and environmental benefits, according to Docklands Studios Melbourne Chair, Louisa Coppel.

“Our industry landscape is rapidly evolving, with streamers, studios and producers increasingly expecting their partners to align with their sustainability goals.

“This move by the SEC to supply a 100% renewable electricity product helps keep Docklands Studios Melbourne globally competitive,” Ms Coppel said.

The SEC is powering everything from traffic lights and surgical equipment in hospitals across the state, to illuminating the lightsabres at Melbourne Museum’s LEGO Star Wars: The Exhibition. As the winter months roll on, the SEC will even power the heat lamps keeping our animals warm at Melbourne Zoo and the many Victorians enjoying our Alpine resorts.

The SEC will soon expand its retail offer to commercial and industrial businesses in Victoria looking to go renewable and reduce their energy costs and consumption.

In addition to being an electricity retailer, the SEC will also provide demand management and behind the meter solutions to help Victorian businesses reduce their reliance on the grid and meet their carbon reduction goals.

The SEC will retail electricity generated by its own projects, as well as Victorian Renewable Energy Auction contracts, such as Berrybank Wind Farm, Cohuna Solar Farm, Dundonnell Wind Farm, Winton Solar Farm and Bulgana Green Power Hub.
